Piel Castle

We drove to Rampside, then across the causeway to Roa Island ( quite near Barrow in Furness ). We could see Piel Island across the water, when suddenly a boatman appeared saying that the ferry would be leaving in 15 minutes!

Piel Castle was built in the 14th century by the Abbot of Furness to guard Barrow in Furness against pirates and Scots raiders.

There is an inn on the tiny island, too! The landlord is crowned King of Piel.
