It was a choice between a coastal walk and a train to Liverpool, 17 stations, one change and an hour west.

Liverpool turned out to have a lively Middle Eastern and Indian community, a dystopian nightmare Westfields with no obvious exits, a stunning new library that’s just been shortlisted for an international design award, abundant public art and unexpected historical references.
