Two volcanoes and a sunrise

The day after Wellington was hit by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake (and a number of aftershocks) I went in search of another Saturday Sunrise. We have stayed in the city for this weekend, and I ran down to the Wynyard Quarter where (having taken some nice photos of boats in the fishing harbour), I watched the sky become suffused with colour as the sun began to rise above the horizon. There was so much cloud in the est, that from this point on the colour disappeared.

On the left is the most recent of Auckland's volcanic cones, Rangitoto. On the right is Mount Victoria (Takarunga), a much more ancient cone, the shape of which has been modified by being the site of Maori Pa (fortified village), and by quarrying by Pakeha following the arrival of British settlers.

It is more dramatic seen large
