Winter sun spot
One of the joys of the warmer seasons is drinking morning tea or coffee outside, sitting in the sun, or as it gets really warm, sitting in the shade.
Last spring, with a half-metre of snow still on the ground, Jan had the idea of digging the snow out of this corner and putting a bench there. Morning sun shines directly onto this wall and with the warmth reflecting back off the wall, as well as up from the snow it was a very comfortable spot to sit on a sunny spring-winter morning.
In the summer it is far too warm here to sit comfortably, so we have constructed it now to see how well it works in autumn, and even maybe in the deep winter. Yesterday it was still too hot but this morning it was a more typical autumn temperature and we sat here a fair while.
The pile of brush on the right was a giant spiraea bush which was stopping us seeing the view of the lake from our new bench, so it had to go. It is really hard to eradicate so I've no doubt that it will be back next spring, and after a couple of years growth will probably need cutting back again!
I spent the rest of the day doing various gardening tasks, and planning to take a cycle ride. In the event "just-one-more-job" syndrome set in and I never did go on the bike!
