Koleeva

Papas NikolaosA photo from Sunday last when we went for a ride with the other sibling of my kids.
Here he and his Sweetheart received sweets, bites, snacks and "koleeva" what is the special treat what is shared in memory of the diseased.
We'd come to the family house of Papas Nikolaos, to hand his wife/widow some photos, I 'd made of him in earlier years. We were welcomed by all of the mourning family, as it happened to be 6 months after the sudden death of Papas Nikolaos ~ that we didn't know. The dead are memorized in special church services that take place 40 days after their "departure", 3 months after and 6 months - and 1 year after their death.
Such Church services are much like a funeral service, except that the funeral does not take place anymore (obviously).

None the less we were ever so welcome, while the whole family had just returned from a special memorial service in church for their passed away relative/ husband / father/ granddad/ uncle. His wife has the title of ' Papadia' (Priest's wife) and keeps that title also as his widow.

For my kids sibling and his Love this was a special introduction in Cretan/ Greek customs and one that left a mark on them.
Foto of them eating koleeva I put up as original here ~ koleeva is in the white disk and her bowl
Papas Nikolaos is in my Blip journal from August 6th, 2019
