We have decided on a dawdle back South so just a short journey today to Cragside, the country home of the Lord Armstrong - a great technological innovator and very successful in the arms trade.

He was the first engineer to have a seat in the House of Lords - now there's a thought - people who understand the application of the sciences having some influence over government - it will never catch on!

Off to Durham tomorrow, and then a couple of days around Staithes and Saltburn.
