Wee Cornsnake
We have several nesting boxes hung on the outside walls of our house. When the baby birds fledge and the boxes are empty, the Cuban tree frogs move in for the winter. These amphibians are an introduced species decimating our native frog populations. There have also been reports that they get into nest boxes and eat nestlings. Well, this tiny (maybe the thickness of my little finger) and very young corn snake, a non venomous native snake, seems to have decided that a Cuban tree frog makes a perfect meal. Corn snakes are most active at night as are the Cuban tree frogs, so that works well! It seems like it's just waiting for the Cubans to begin moving in for the winter. I think I even saw it licking it 'lips'. Although I might just be imagining that! Do check the *extras for a couple more shots of our 'guest'. m
