It's The Way I Tell 'Em!
M and I had a wonderful morning at Redwings Horse Sanctuary in Caldecott Nr Great Yarmouth. We specifically went to see the donkeys, which are always entertaining.
These two were braying excitedly because they were about to receive a treat of gingernut biscuits (not from us, from the staff member who’d just given the visitors a talk about the donkeys).
We have adopted 'Esther', (see extra). Esther is a very small donkey because her mother was malnourished and wasn't able to provide the nutrients that Esther needed. They were rescued from a farm in Amersham, along with a number of other horses and donkeys where they were found in awful conditions. The sanctuary cared for them all and as you can see Esther is now very happy and enjoying the sunshine today. Although she is only 16 years old she will spend the rest of her days being looked after in the peaceful surroundings of the sanctuary.
We found out today that donkeys can live up to around 60 years old. The gender name for donkeys is 'Jack' for males and 'Jenny' for females. They love being outside in dry weather but don't like getting wet. Apparently their coat is not as waterproof as horses so they are kept in roomy barns in the winter. They are highly social animals and form strong bonds with each other. They can become ill if they are separated from their best friend.
PS: I've just added another extra. I don't know this donkey's name but whatever it is, it is undeniably cute.
