It’s a moot point

After a very smooth drive (not using sat nav, but good old fashioned brain power) we are back home after a lovely weekend in Keswick.

Here’s the Moot Hall in Keswick’s Main Street.

A moot hall is a meeting or assembly building, traditionally to decide local issues.

In Anglo Saxon England, a low ring-shaped earthwork served as a moot hall or moot mound, where the elders of the hundred would meet to take decisions. Some of these acquired permanent buildings, known as moot halls.

The hall has its origins in a medieval courthouse, used by the manor of Castlerigg and Derwentwater, which was in the ownership of the Radclyffe family by the 16th century.

This current structure, built of lime-washed stone and slate walling, was commissioned by the trustees of Greenwich Hospital in 1813.

Loved Keswick and how well kept it looks (brilliant Saturday market too) We did note also, that there are a lot of outdoor shops and about 80% of the people walking around were dressed in outdoor (and posh) clothing and boots … no Primark here.

I hope you have had a great day.
