EEK !It's a woodcock!!!
So, we had not been to Sapsucker Woods ( the Cornell Ornithology Lab site) since spring and I wanted to go and have a nice walk around the property and hopefully catch some migrants. But when we got there they were having the grand reopening of the lab after renovations ,;it was closed to visitors all spring/summer though the trails have bene open. It was packed, people everywhere , tours of the building , birding on the trails , raptor and bird banding exhibits..... and we skirted around it all and walked some of the trails. They were largely devoid of visible birds , though you could hear flickers and chickadees, titmice and a few others, and we did see a few ducks , a heron and a kingfisher at the pond. Rounding a corner of the last stretch before the parking lot we came upon a group of people surrounding a guy with a tripod and camera who was watching what turned out to be a woodcock. Now we have had them in spring on our property and I have seen silhouettes flying by and doing their spring mating rituals , but never seen one in daytime> Finally !! They are so so well camouflaged , I can't thank this guy enough for being kind enough to show everybody who passed by!
