Tam o’ Shanter while walking at this very spot, now known as Tams Walk, and said  when taking on the lease of the farm in 1788,
‘The banks of the Nith are as sweet, poetic ground as ever I saw.’
He was offered the choice of three farms and decided on Ellisland as being ‘more poetic’.
