Going on a bear hunt
Today started with a little early teaser as when we woke up my friend and I had differing times on our watches. Unbeknown to us we’d crossed a time zone driving here yesterday and her watch had updated automatically, mine hadn’t so we were up at 5am, not 6am as we’d thought !Breakfast was a perfect Canadian delicacy of waffles, bacon and maple syrup.
We then headed south to drive to Nakusp Hot Springs. A drive of about 2 hours, with a short ferry crossing in the middle across Shelter Bay. The hot spa was great, two pools one 38 degrees the other 40. Bobbing about in the pools was a perfect first day activity. After lunch we headed back and made a short detour to Sutherland Falls, a little uneasy because of the bear warning signs but we made some noise and headed down the track. The waterfall was amazing but the red salmon loitering in the rock pools were a highlight. After a short chat with a Canadian couple who reassured us that it was unlikely we’d see any bears we drove off. Only to then 10 minutes later come across a bear at the side of the road eating. A quick u-turn and we pulled up along side him and although curious about us, in our car, he carried on eating! A super first day exploring but now wondering how much hiking in bear country we will be doing?
