The Piper Alpha Memorial...
....commemorates the 167 men killed on 6 July 1988, 120 miles offshore in the North Sea on the Occidental oil platform. 61 men were rescued.
Over and above the names of these men, the south face of the plinth supporting the statue is inscribed with the names of 30 men, with no resting place, above a carved Celtic Cross which has interred behind it a casket of unkonown ashes. On the east face are inscribed the names of 2 heroic men who made the supreme sacrifice for their fellow men.
The Piper Alpha tragedy was the world's worst off-shore disaster.
