St Lawrence..

… Ever intrigued about Saints, I looked up St Lawrence, given that inside this beautiful church there were images of what seemed to be fences and fires. (If you looked closely). St Lawrence is always depicted with gridirons apparently.
He was said to have been ‘grilled’…

However… There is a question it seems, as to whether there was a mistake in the Latin translation regarding his death. The question is, was it ‘passus est’ (‘he suffered’) or ‘assus est’ (‘he was roasted’)? Because, it was written that Pope Sixtus ll was martyred by decapitation four days earlier and his death was described as ‘passus est’…
It feels quite heretic to be questioning the above. But did a mistake mean they missed off the ‘p’, thus changing the meaning??

St Lawrence has been the Patron Saint of barbecues and people who work with open fires (and librarians) for hundreds of years…
I’m sure that’s how it will remain.
He is a widely venerated saint.
I have nothing but respect for all of his good work and miracles.

(And his church is lovely).

I’m sure I could have explained the above in a better way. I’m enjoying a break, and my brain is a bit out to lunch.
