Wound up in Wexford

Calla

This spring we treated ourselves to some canna and calla "lilies".  We were a bit late getting them into the ground, and of course the summer hasn't been the sunniest, so the canna haven't managed to produce any flowers.

But the calla are rather lovely.

We're not the most fussy gardeners, and I'm not sure about their long term survival - they're not frost hardy, have to be dug up and brought in each autumn - will we be organised enough?

Our day started with a discussion about the siting of our meadow and polytunnel, which resulted in a complete change of plans regarding both.  After that, I spent more time weeding - I'm now clearing alongside the roadside ditch, which has become rather overgrown with nettles (dying off, but still have a sting - my fingers are tingling this evening), bracken and brambles.  I scattered foxglove seeds in the area in the spring, and am pleased to see that despite somewhat neglecting the area, a decent number have germinated, so we should have foxgloves next year.

The garden is looking loads better for our intensive efforts to tidy it up over the last week, but I still have at least half the ditch to clear.  We're forecast rain for tomorrow.
