Caledonia Waterfalls and being 60
I was glad to get out of the Hotel and hop on an organised bus tour.
We had a pit stop at Kolossi fruit farm. We were given ‘lemonade’ and enjoyed a half hour stop to look at the growing fruit. There were pomegranates, oranges, limes, lemons, grapefruits, dragon fruits, grape vines and budda hands - looks like a closed hand but with citrus skin in yellow. Some of our party had been on the bus for over 2 hours they were pleased to get off the bus.
We soon reached the lush, cool forest that carpets the Troodos mountains. We had another quick break in Platres before starting the trail. We set off on a 4km hike along a stream called Kyros Potamos to the Caledonia Falls. It was very rocky and steep in places. There were also lots of twisted tree roots everywhere. We crossed the stream several times. The stream was clear but there was a grey sediment on the bottom. The whole path was shaded by the huge pines, golden oaks and strawberry trees. I really enjoyed the walk. Fortunately nobody broke a leg!
Lunch was served at Psilo Dendro restaurant. It was ok.
The guide took us to Aphrodites Rock. Folk law suggests it was her birth place. Legend also states that if you swim round the rock 3 times, in the nude, on a full moon, you’ll look 10 years younger. I was out of luck, no full moon till 18/9 - ha ha.
Speaking of age, I’m celebrating my 60th birthday today. I’m not sure how that’s happened, it doesn’t seem that long since I was 40. We’re off for dinner followed by cocktails shortly.
