The house in a box
We visited the Hill House in Helensburgh today.
The house was designed in 1902 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh for Glasgow book publisher Walter Blackie and family.
In constructing the house Mackintosh used cement roughcast, a revolutionary material at the time, instead of the usual lime. Unfortunately this has led to water ingress and considerable dampness in the building.
The National Trust for Scotland are caretakers of the house and in order to dry out the building a steel mesh box was constructed around the whole building in 2018. It does seem to be working but may need to remain in place for 10 to 15 years.
As a visitor the advantage is that you get to see the outside from above via walkways. A unique experience.
The inside is superb with everything from furniture and wall coverings being designed by Mackintosh.
