The Great Garden
At 7am the sun rose above the hill at the back of the house and stayed out all day. Daughter One and I had planned to visit Lismore - the island I visited last Friday with my friend Tim. The name Lismore means 'The Great Garden' - the island is green and fertile and is a calcareous intrusion in a generally acid area.
This time we took the car ferry from Oban, a journey of around 50 minutes. 'Loch Striven' is a fairly small boat and carries 6 or 7 vehicles. We took the path northwards from the ferry landing along the shore, through very wet ground, but with a rich flora. We aimed for the Tirefour broch (see extra), a ruined building which dates from the Iron Age and was inhabited until the Middle Ages. It was a long haul across rough ground and I could feel my dodgy hip beginning to play up!
After spending some time at the broch, we carried on across country to avoid a huge loop in the road, and after having a quick look round the Lismore Church, stopped off at the café at the Heritage Centre for lunch. We then made our way back along the road to catch the 3pm ferry back to Oban.
A wonderful day out, though I'm not sure when I'll be able to walk again!!
