Diversity

Diversity cannot be either the  goal or the sole measurement of success
of any society which is trying to become at ease with difference. Why?
Because diversity is normally measured by numbers and statistics and a
diverse society is not in itself a guarantee of inclusion.

Diversity is like a recipe, wherein all the ingredients are laid down
together on a work surface in preparation for the feast that is to come.

In this metaphor, inclusion is the making of the meal, a process in which
all  the diverse ingredients come together and produce something more than
the sum total of their parts.

Their coming together creates something new, rich and made for sharing.

So, we may have statistics that show we have more diverse spaces - in
schools and workplaces, than before, but that diversity is only the starting
point - the foundation for something greater and more impactful  - if only
we agreed to make the investment to move beyond diversity.

If we remain comfortable with diversity as our sole measure of success, we
are settling for less.  But any attempt to move to the full inclusion of
"them" brings fear to some. For those who are threatened by such a change,
it creates the concern that including "them" in "our "future could result in
a loss of identity, privilege, rights and place in society for "us".

So, if we really believe in a better society where inclusion is our goal,
then we need to become creators of spaces that model this way of living.

What risks are we willing to take to create a society of embrace?
