Day 6 - Saumarez

A fascinating tour of Saumarez homestead near Armidale. For 130 years Saumarez was a family home and the centre of a successful wool station in the Northern Tablelands of NSW. Of the three families who ran Saumarez, the Dumaresq family, the Thomases and the Whites, the Whites played the major role in shaping it.

The first Saumarez homestead was in this cluster of farm buildings on the creek, a slab house with a brick extension. Here Maggie White brought up five of her seven children. In 1888 Maggie and Francis (F.J.) White built a grander house on the hill, adding another storey in 1906. This is the present homestead shown in MountGrace’s blip - https://www.blipfoto.com/entry/3277271799896739437 .

Our lovely guide Greta brought the story to life, showing how successive generations, and particularly Miss Mary White and Miss Elsie, created and preserved the house as it is today.
