Exponential growth
We use the rice and chessboard problem to illustrate exponential growth. Imagine a chessboard, it has 64 squares. On the first square put a grain of rice, on the next square put two grains, four on the next. Carry on, doubling the amount each time. The final square would have 2 raised to the power of 64, minus 1. This is 18,446,744,073,709,551,615 (Eighteen quintillion and change).
We also use the rice and chessboard problem to make an emergency blip of some rice, cooked to use in chicken fried rice later, sound as though it was planned. The green pod is cardoman - if you are not adding this to rice when you cook it you are really missing out!
