Split, Croatia

On a sailing trip on the Adriatic for a week with N+B and family.  Flew to Split, the second city in Croatia, yesterday and spent today in Split. We go up the coast a bit tomorrow to pick up a catamaran that N+B have chartered.  Split (Spalato in Itlaian) was founded as a Greek colony in the 2nd or 3rd century BC and the Roman emperor Diocletian built a palace here. Over the centuries Split has been governed by the Roman empire,  Byzantium, Venice, Napoleon and the Austria-Hungarian empire. It became part of Yugoslavia in 1918 after the first world war.

Today's blip is the belltower of St Domnius cathedral in Split. The cathedral was built in various stages but it's origins date back to the 3rd century AD, when Diocletian built a mausoleum on the site.
