Palladian
Today we visited two Palladian style villas in Ayrshire.
The main picture is of Auchinleck House, the family seat of James Boswell (1740-1795), the famous diarist and biographer which was open this weekend as part of Doors Open Days. Auckinleck House was built between 1755 and 1760 and was restored from a derelict state by The Landmark Trust in 2001. It is now available as a holiday let sleeping 13. What a wonderful place to hire for a family or friends get together, I would love it!
My favourite feature of the whole house is in the 1st extra, a ‘ceiling rose’ in the shape of a flying bird, I’ve never seen that anywhere else.
The 2nd extra is of the beautiful Dumfries House where we stopped for a walk around the gardens, coffee and scones in the excellent cafe before heading to Auchinleck. The two properties are close by and built around the same date in the same style. Dumfries House being part of the King’s Foundation is a much bigger concern and set in beautiful grounds but it was interesting and lovely to see them both in one morning.
