Truly Great
Today was one of those days when my energy deserted me. I have been working flat out for several weeks and today was a necessary battery-recharging day, so I've hardly been outside (except to fill up the hedgehog and bird feeders!) and I’ve taken things very easy.
You’ve probably gathered that I’m one of life’s romantic types. Thus I love the poem "Truly Great" by W. H. Davies, the Welsh poet, writer and tramp, particularly the first verse (which sums up my love of flowers and books) and the last verse (which celebrates Davies’ contented marriage). I’ve quoted those two verses below to accompany my photo of a Peace rose in our front garden.
My walls outside must have some flowers,
My walls within must have some books;
A house that's small; a garden large,
And in it leafy nooks.
With this small house, this garden large,
This little gold, this lovely mate,
With health in body, peace in heart –
Show me a man more great.
W. H. Davies
