First and last view

94 years ago today the people of St Kilda were evacuated.

It is an amazing place and I am lucky to have been there twice - once in the summer of 1991 when I was making a film for STV about the rocket range in South Uist , and the second time in June 2007 when I visited as Scotland’s Environment Minister to commemorate the double world heritage designation given to the archipelago.

On that occasion I went on the Fishery  Protection vessel Jura , though another Scottish FPV  delivered the following year was named Hirta after the island.  I boarded the Jura in Stornoway and flew there - via a circuit over Iona and the  Sound of Mull  - in the Fishery Protection plane too.

This was the view approaching the stacks - more on my Flickr site.
