Margam Castle

This is Margam Castle taken from inside Margam Park .
Margam Castle was built between 1830-1840. It was built for Christopher Rice Mansel Talbot. He was a major shareholder in the Great Western Railway, owned a 34,ooo acre estate and developed the port of Port Talbot .
He was born in 1803 and died in 1890. He had three daughters and one son. His wife died young and his son was tragically killed in a riding accident at the age of 37.
The estate was valued in excess of 3 million in 1890. He was the wealthiest commoner in the country and represented Glamorgan as a Member of Parliament for 59 years.
Emily Charlotte Talbot inherited the Morgan Estate from her father in 1890 remaining here until her death in 1918.The estate was then passed to the Fletchers of Saltourn in Scotland.
American soldiers were billeted here in WW 11.
Sir David Evans Bevan , a wealthy publican bought the estate in 1942.
Glamorgan County Council purchased the estate in 1973 and it was opened to the public in 1977.
J and i went to the park today and will be going back soon as we enjoyed it so much.
