Wartime puzzle

Solved.

The initials on this trunk label are my uncle's, but we couldn't think where he would have travelled to from Liverpool in 1939, or why. As far as we knew his only time living abroad was as a conscript.

A question to our cousins solved the puzzle. Their dad had been sent by his employers to work in their New York office. When conscription started, his call-up papers went to his mother's house and by the time they'd been forwarded to him, he'd missed his date and been posted AWOL. I think a flurry on telegrams and a swift return were needed to put things right.
