The culprit

A broken drive shaft is the reason the combine stopped moving yesterday. The owner sent two guys to dismantle it in the morning. We towed it to the small road next to the field, as it's easier to support the jack well on harder surface, and removed the wheel and the portal gear to see that it was the drive shaft that was the culprit. The broken point was covered by a clamp at that point, but after removing the clamp, two bearings and a shield, the shaft came out easily and the whole process took about an hour.

Unfortunately a spare wasn't available today, so I had to find something else to do. Not hard, as the rest of the grass should also be harvested, but I wasn't sure I could find anyone to bale it. Luckily my regular baling contractor was willing to try to make it on Thursday, even though he is also busy with his own grain harvest. 

According to two out of three forecasts it should be dry until Friday afternoon and the third has just a little rain for tomorrow. I decided to mow all the grass that is left, and got it done by 6 pm. If the combine will  be fixed tomorrow, I might manage to harvest the rest of barley tomorrow and all the oats before the next rain, and get the grass baled relatively dry, but I hope that's not too much to wish!
