Duckweed

This Blip has nothing to do with the Diddly Squat farm.
The teatowel is simply something on which to stand the six jars. If it also raises a smile thats good.

Each of the six jars contains water and floating on the surface are six samples of Duckweed. Its proper name is Lemna. Botanists recognise 14 species of  Lemna. Its a tiny plant which floats on the surface of fresh water. There is a single leaf and a single root hanging down. But then the leaf splits into two or three more and the the new ones split and before you know it the whole pond is covered.
The plant has several uses and in some places it is farmed. More about that in Wikipedia.

It is standing on our table because botanists are blessed with an intense need to know.
It has always been thought that 3 species grow in our local area. But recently somebody has said they have found a fourth.
So Mrs. K. has been collecting samples from different places and soon we should be visited by botanical friends with magnifying glasses to settle the issue.
