Mimic

It’s another day for garden safaris as we’ve reverted to our ‘stay at home during a bank holiday’ mode. G is recovering from a day of furniture removal yesterday, and I’m just - well - tired.

I’ve been trying to develop my macro skills recently, my 105mm lens having been my most neglected over recent months. Today, it’s bees and hoverflies that are the star attraction - well in fairness, the only attraction.

This rather chunky specimen is, apparently, a male hornet mimic hoverfly - though I think it definitely looks more friendly than a hornet. Like many insects, it’s been gradually making its way northwards having been a rarity even in southern England in the last century. (I hope my identification is correct - if not, I know more expert blippers will let me know!)

Again it’s better large!
