On Saturday and Sunday...
....they do no work at all. Nor will the gasman come on Monday (as he does in the Flanders and Swann song), as tomorrow is a Bank Holiday. The hole is the visible sign of "essential" works to the gas mains in one of the roads leading into Chobham that started in July and are due to continue until October. The road is now only open for traffic going into Chobham and is controlled by a 3-way traffic light system during the main weekday hours. This has been clogging up to the roads in and out of the village, a situation that will be intensified further when the St Lawrence primary school, that is accessed from two of those roads, reopens for the autumn term in a week or so. In the meantime there's nothing like gazing into a hole in the ground - cue another light entertainment song, this one by the late Bernard Cribbins.
