Whalebone Arch
My wife and I went for a lovely afternoon spin up the west coast of Lewis - visiting old friends and catching up. This is the famous whalebone arch in the village of Bragar. It is the skeletal jawbone of a huge whale that was once washed up on the shore here - to give you an idea of scale, the harpoon hanging down from the centre is about two metres long. In recent years the bones have been injected with a plastic epoxy in order to combat the natural deterioration of the bone, but they are still pretty spectacular.
