The Pensioner

The Red Carpet

A trip to the dump followed by more mixing of concrete; my little path looks quite decent now. Though I fear I’ve used too large a stone at the top which offends my eye. I may need to take further action.
Then off to the Cameo to see the third and final screening of short films in the running for the new Thelma Schoonmaker award – “a bumper crop of world premieres showcasing talent at the cutting edge of cinema.”  Ten short films and oh my word etc they were excellent - the standard seemed to be so much higher than collections I’ve seen in previous years which were always a bit hit or miss. For my own memory I’ll cut and paste the programme notes for my very own top three.

3rd Paternal Advice : A starkly realist short from Scottish director Lisa Clarkson exploring tough love and masculinity passed down the generations.

2nd My Dad and the Volcano : Scottish director Gavin Reid explores his relationship with his father and his art in this quirky and poignant documentary short.

1st Manny Wolfe : A funny and moving spin on classic noir featuring a werewolf actor who can’t catch a break in Hollywood, directed by Trevor Neuhoff.

I’ve got to say that Manny Wolfe was a cut above the others; and a call out to the SK’s favourite Nico : American director Max Olson debuts their unique visual style, in this bold and haunting short about a trans man who reminds an elderly widow of her late husband.

All in all a very knockout collection of films. We stepped home all elated. And then Fear the Walking Dead Series 3 continues…. honestly, I question my sanity.
