The Way I See Things

By JDO

Frothy

It was a dour kind of a day, but having no temptation to go out hunting inverts this afternoon did at least mean that I got a lot of other things done around the house. Shortening my to-do list didn't exactly make me happy, but it lowered my stress level quite a bit.

R had an appointment in Stratford this morning, and I went along as chauffeuse. While he was in his meeting I walked along the Avon, more in hope than in expectation of seeing some Odonata - which meant that I was left disappointed, but not surprised, by the single Banded Demoiselle I spotted in the space of at least a mile of river bank.

By the time I reached the weir I was so resigned to not getting anything at all on camera, that I couldn't quite believe this heron was calmly posing on a rock in front of the frothing water. There's a little stretch of concrete wharf opposite the weir, and having found my angle I knelt down there so as to be on the same level as the bird, and maximise the drama going on behind it. When I stood up again I realised that a man was standing just behind me, photographing the same scene on his phone. He eyed my camera and said, "I'll bet you're getting better pictures than me," and I replied, "I hope so, or I've wasted an awful lot of money on this gear."
