Castell y Fflint
Another day, another castle: Flint castle was the first of Edward I's Welsh castles - built a day's march from Chester, with each subsequent castle a further day's march deeper into Wales; though all were capable of being supplied and reinforced by sea and, in Flint's case, defended - its moat was tidal. Like Rhuddlan, it was despoiled in the 17th century for harbouring Royalists during the Civil War; fortunately similar orders for Conwy were not carried out so thoroughly and not at all for Caernarfon.
As with all Edward's Welsh castles, Flint had a plantation town attached - open to English residents and traders only, though the Welsh would have been permitted entrance during daylight hours. Thankfully, these days, they even admit Scots :)
