(229) Mauritania

This is a copy of 35mm slide taken by my Dad in early 1966, showing the Mauritania at Inverkeithing, Fife. RMS Mauretania was a British ocean liner that was launched on 28 July 1938 at the Cammell Laird yard in Birkenhead, England, and was completed in May 1939. She was one of the first ships built for the newly formed Cunard-White Star company following the merger in April 1934 of the Cunard and White Star Line.
Mauretania's last passenger voyage was a Mediterranean cruise which left New York on 15 September 1965. Leaving Southampton on 20 November for her final sailing, she arrived at Thos. W. Ward's shipbreaking yard in Inverkeithing. By late April 1966, her funnels were gone; by mid-1966, the superstructure was removed. Scrapping was finished by late 1966.

The extra is another on of the 200+ slides I copied today. This shows a view from the platform at Largs station, in Ayrshire. The slide is dated September 1975.
