On the wall
Soon after we moved in we removed tons of ivy growing densely on an ancient copper beech at the side of the house. We expected to find a retaining wall but there was nothing holding in the roots of the hedge. We had a beautifully rendered curved wall built which soon became known locally as ‘the wonky wall’. Planting was problematic as the soil at the foot of the hedge was poor and there wasn’t really much space for a fully fledged border. Eventually we planted 9 Pittosporum ‘Golf Ball’ to provide permanent structure and interspersed them with seasonal bulbs, such as alliums and erythronium and hardy fuchsias. I’m constantly editing the planting to keep colour and interest throughout the seasons. This section shows Cornus, Fuchsia ‘Hawkshead’ and a Persicaria which I think is called Red Dragon and which is a mad self seeder!! One day I’ll get it right.
