Man-made Landscape

Despite initial appearances, the cascade at Virginia Water is man-made. In fact it is the second second such construct built on the lake, itself created by flooding a valley as part of the Royal Landscape  (extra). The first cascade, built in the 1750s, was swept away by a violent storm in 1768, and rebuilt in 1780s for King George III.

It is the only cascade or waterfall of substance in SE England, so a popular location, though the recent dry weather has reduced its flow to a trickle. In wetter times and after heavy rainfall it is much more imposing, as seen in my blip from March 2023.
