The Lozarithm Lens

Recent Acquisitions (Wednesday 14th August 2024)

In my studying of Mojo backnumbers I have reached the issue for April 2019 (all from August 2021 onwards have already been dealt with), and in it I read a review of a new album by Mercury Rev entitled Bobby Gentry's The Delta Sweete Revisited.  They had brought in a number of well known female vocalists to re-interpret the songs on that album, including Norah Jones, Hope Sandoval, Laetitia Sadier, Vashti Bunyan, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucinda Williams and Rachel Goswell from 'shoe-gazing' band Slowdive.

Although I have owned a copy of Bobbie Gentry Performs The Delta Sweete since 2009, a remixed and expanded deluxe 2CD edition had been released in 2020, and before long both that and the Mercury Rev album were winging their way to me, dropping onto the Old Forge mat today. I have been investigating both but haven't yet had a chance to play either.

Rear sleeve easier to read in Large.

Lozarithm's Lozarhythm Of The Day:
Bobbie Gentry - Jessye' Lisabeth (recorded 11 November 1967, overdubs 7 December 1967, Hollywood CA)
I thought I would re-acquaint myself with the original Delta Sweete before listening to the Mercury Rev set, and in doing so rediscovered just what a wonderful thing is Bobbie Gentry's voice in its prime, complete with her Mississippi drawl (apparently more apparent in her singing voice than  her speaking voice), never more so than on this song, which, coincidentally was heard on the radio just last week when Mark Knopfler chose it as one of his Desert Island Discs.
