Afternoon Concert

This was an interesting concert at Marchmont St Giles church as the instruments played were all Vienna Horns. These are described as 'a cousin of the more familiar modern Bflat and F double horn ( often referred to as the French horn) but its construction, in particular its double-piston valves, dates back to 1830 and has remained virtually unchanged since'. We were told that the tubing measures some 3.7m  (over 12ft)

To us the sound is not bright, like a trumpet, but more mellow like a trombone, the five players entertained us for an hour with music from Austria.

By chance our friends also attended the concert so we caught up on news over coffee in the cafe afterwards.
