... electronic plumbing.  We normally keep computers for 10-12 years, having 3 on the go at any one time.  This is the first time in 30 years we've had a troubled one: motherboard failed a month out of warranty (but Mr Dell replaced for free) and at 4 years the hard disk drive gave up.   Got a bit of a shock when the screen on the (6 month old) laptop just froze while we were studying the service manual and we had difficulty shutting it down for a restart.  All well in the end.
