But god that was hard work. I mean, never-again-over-my-dead-body-you-‘avin-a-laugh hard work. Never want to see another ladder, paint brush or tin of paint again.

Talking of hard work: finished reading Stone Yard Devotional, my second Booker Prize book of the year. Very good book but not a light read. Death, plagues of mice, regrets, humiliation, and a bit of a reconciliation at the end. Not for the faint hearted. The general message (I think) is that you can find companionship and purpose in many places but ultimately life is (mouse) shit and then you die.

Enlightenment, which is my next one, is a relief by contrast. Fifty pages in I am loving it. Beautifully written, mysterious, idiosyncratic. According to The Guardian "Enlightenment is gauzy and unhurried, a genteel novel of inner space. It’s luxuriously – defiantly – old-fashioned."


Works for me right now. I’ve been pulled though a mangle physically and emotionally this last few weeks and a bit of old fashioned is just what the doctor ordered…
