Hymns For Robots
It had always been my intention to go back up to Kirkby, this afternoon, as Dan is back from London, but it turned out that he was working at Spar, this evening*.
Thus, having picked him up from the station, taken him home, and had a bit of a catch up, I returned to Lancaster, specifically to Kanteena for one of the regular Hymns For Robots evenings.
These gatherings are organised by Dave Shooter who also performs as Guerrilla Biscuits, and he opened this evening's event in a low key way, starting his performance as people were still having a drink and chatting.
I should say a little bit about Kanteena, actually, which is an event space set up in an old warehouse the grounds of the brewery. It has rough and ready vibes, redolent of White Hotel in Salford. I rather like it, and I definitely liked the upstairs room where Hymns For Robots was staged.
Back to the gig, the second act was a chap called James Adrian Brown, who (from what I could see) combines pre-determined sounds and signal chains with sounds generated/extracted in real time, in this case from a radio set. Whatever the process, I enjoyed it!
The third act was a woman called Kayla Painter, with whom I have a subscription via Bandcamp (their version of Patreon, basically). This was a calmer, more ambient, less improvised set, but the audience were equally attentive.
And to close the show, was Field Lines Cartographer, introduced by Dave Shooter, as "The Don". I do like his stuff a lot, his recent album 'Portable Reality Generator' is excellent, but I wonder if he's a little overhyped. I might bring Yoss along next time and get his perspective.
