Once upon a time phone numbers were simple. Many will know or have heard of Whitehall 1212 aka New Scotland Yard.

In the 1960's this was replaced with 01.230-1212 when numbers became all figure numbering, 01 being London and 230 being the Whitehall exchange. With the increase of phone lines this number is now 020.7230-1212.

Since 2011 non-urgent calling to the police has been made easier with 101 although you can still dial the long number.
