Exploring the Everglades...

Had a lovely day today. Drove to Everglades City, then took an airboat tour out into the mangrove forests. We saw alligators, racoons and a whole variety of bird life. Had lunch at the World Famous Oyster House (the sign said it was world famous, we'd never heard of it) and then explored Chokoloskee Island, which has a lovely old museum built in what was the former post office and trading post with the native Americans. They seem to have got along reasonably well, as the Seminole people used to bring in their silver for the storekeeper to bank for them. Later had a lovely walk along the Big Cypress Bend boardwalk which took us out into the middle of the mangrove swamps on foot. Without a path to follow it would be impossible to know where you were going as it is just a mesh of roots and plants, teeming with wildlife. We saw up close a poisonous cottonmouth snake, but, educated by our zoo visit yesterday, we were able to enjoy this without panicking. We gave it a respectful distance and it left us in peace. A lovely walk, but, despite lashings of insect repellent, we picked up a fair number of bites. Saw some lovely insect life and chose this colourful little chap for today's Blip.
Apologies to all for my recent lack of comments... I am looking forward to going through all of your journals when I get home...
