Gooseneck. Leitz Summicron 50mm DR

Over the last week, I have been scraping and sanding that big base molding on the Blanket Chest in preparation for varnishing.  The tool for scraping into the cove to remove any irregularities from the molding plane, is a piece of tempered steel to which a minuscule hook is applied along its edges.  It's a very simple tool, but "turning the burr" just right takes a lot of practice.  When it's done correctly, the scraper will remove whisper-thin shavings of wood with no tear-out.  The little rod resting on it is the burnisher which turns the burr.  It's made of carbide steel, impossibly hard, and when run at right angles to the scraper's edge, it pushes the tiny square edge over into a razor-sharp hook which does the cutting.

As I was preparing this image, I noticed the manufacturer's logo on the scraper: it's from a German company, Hirsch, - Stag, hence the logo -, which makes excellent woodworking tools.  I have had this scraper so long, that it still proclaims that it was made in W Germany.  Time does fly...
