As Marias

The cathedral square drew me back this morning, by I0.30 a long queue had already formed for the midday Pilgram Mass. I visited the cathedral bookshop and then walked down to the Parque Alameda. I love this sculpture dedicated to two sisters who wore eclectic clothes and lots of make up.

They were part of a liberal-thinking family and some of their brothers were involved in the anarchist movement in the 1930s, before the Spanish Civil War broke out. The brothers managed to escape and lived in hiding, the family left behind in Santiago, including the sisters, were regularly harassed and questioned by the authorities.
