What's the Welsh for Sláinte?
I was invited to join my brother today for a tour of Penderyn Distillery in the Brecons, South Wales. Happily, Janet drove me home because the day was both interesting and entertaining, and a little delicious. You'll perhaps know that I'm overly fond of the peaty Islay single malts, but apart from one bottle somewhere in the cupboard I wasn't really au fait with the Welsh.
My brother didn't know whisky began as a barley beer, but while I knew that I didn't know that Penderyn began by distilling beer from Brains brewery in Cardiff! The unique Faraday design whisky still, too... more akin to a petroleum cracking still... was news to me. Every day a learning day.
Engaging with the tour guide after the samples had been distributed, we did the nosing and tasting thing... I enjoyed the Olorosso Sherry barrel expression, full of cherries, but felt the Peated glass was a bit thin in comparison with Islay. Then he offered us an extra, and I went with the Rich Oak, and I'm afraid a bottle of that came home with me... :-)
Not too silly for Saturday?
