Samsung DeX ...
... this may be of interest if you have a Samsung smartphone capable of running DeX.
I am on a quest to take the minimal amount of tech with me on motorcycle tours – the less weight, the better. Until now, I have always packed a 13-inch laptop and while it is not overly large/heavy, add in the protective case,13-amp power supply and adaptor, and it becomes cumbersome. Given that my Samsung smartphone will run Lightroom, in theory, this could suffice. However, editing on a small screen is less than user friendly – enter Samsung DeX which provides a Windows-like interface on a portable screen, attached via USB to the phone.
The set up includes the following extras:
Eyoyo Portable Monitor, 10.5 inch (incl connecting cables) - £93.58 Seenda Folding Bluetooth Keyboard with Touchpad - £23.99
Bluetooth mouse - £6.49
The Fuji X100VI will also upload images directly to the phone so, in theory, it provides a fully integrated solution. The negatives so far:
- The mouse pointer is small and black – I can find no way to enlarge
within DeX
- DeX seems to be designed assuming the portable monitor is touch
sensitive (the Eyoyo is not) – I can find no way to scroll, hence the inclusion of a Bluetooth mouse with scroll wheel
- I have not used LR enough to know if there are limitations compared
to the Windows version (I usually use PS – which is definitely limited on
Android)
- I have yet to investigate RAW support on this configuration
- The USB interface between phone and screen is supposed to power the screen as well as support DeX – it does not. A separate USB is required to power the Eyoyo.
The next adventure is to the Isle of Harris in September – I will need to become more familiar with this version of LR, long before then.
And, playing on Radio Sandhoe today: Elijah Siegler - Jacob and the Stone - cinematic cover
