At the Saturday farmers' market

On the Lafayette Square Park in Oxford this morning the farmer's market was thriving with a great variety of tables selling or promoting many things. You can see some of the action in the background.
Fresh vegetables were everywhere. Someone was selling tee shirts and other items to benefit the Oxford Historical Society. The Episcopal Church ladies had homemade cakes, cookies and used paperback books for sale to benefit the Food Bank. I bought a variety of perennials from a few different sellers. I bought this red Bee Balm from a gardening Viet Nam Vet who also told me he's growing over 280 varieties of day lilies. And the smiling woman has a double stand with beautifully fresh, clean vegetables, jams and preserves, amber maple syrup, jars of honey just taken from the comb the night before, and freshly baked sourdough round bread. She really worked to prepare for this day. I could not resist buying the beautiful raw honey and would have blipped that but the smiling baker, beekeeper, creative cook was more irresistible.

Her second table was set up for registering to vote and to sign a petition against Fracking-- that insidious practice of forcing chemically treated water into the shale rock far underground to get the rock to release the natural gas that lays between the shale. We are being pressured by the oil and gas companies to allow the fracturing of the underground shale in our county. This lovely, energetic woman started the resistance movement here that turned the tide (so far) in our community and several of our neighbouring towns are now resisting too.
I was pleased to finally meet this happy woman and to buy her golden honey. Oh... and to take her photo.
